The World as You'll Know It

A Podcast About the Forces Shaping Our Future

We are living through years of enormous change, when the time between cause and effect is ever shrinking. We can’t predict the future, but we can get a better handle on what’s happening right now, and how these disruptions may shape the years to come.

This season of The World as You’ll Know It goes inside the unprecedented technological revolution caused by the global effort to replace fossil fuels with clean energy. We meet the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs taking on this challenge and explore the opportunities and risks facing new technologies like green hydrogen, carbon capture and next-generation batteries that are poised to remake the world as new energy sources replace old ones.

Previous seasons of the podcast explored the promise and perils of artificial intelligence, the latest advancements in brain science, the role of technology in society and the long-term social and economic effects of Covid-19.

The World as You’ll Know It is brought to you by Aventine, a non-profit research institute creating and sharing work that explores how today’s decisions could affect the future. The views expressed are those of the participants and do not represent those of Aventine, its employees or affiliates.

Season Five: The Great Rebuild

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you are part of one of the most ambitious projects we as humans have ever attempted: Rebuilding the world, pretty much from the ground up, in order to switch from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. It’s a major undertaking, one that will require staggering financial investment and the success of technologies many people have never heard of. In this season of The World as You'll Know It, science journalist Arielle Duhaime-Ross goes deep inside the world of cutting-edge climate technologies and asks: How is this all going to work? The answers — from some of the world’s most innovative and audacious thinkers, builders and investors — reveal the promise, obstacles and tradeoffs of a new clean-energy landscape that will shape the way we live.
